Panda Perspectives: Fatima Chauca

At Panda, we know that placing a contractor is only the beginning. What happens after the handshake: the first week in a new environment, the questions that come up mid-contract, the moments where someone just needs a straight answer, that's where the real relationship is built.

Fatima Chauca understands both sides of that equation. She joined Panda as a Senior Recruitment Consultant, building relationships with contractors before they'd even started an assignment. Now, as Workforce Operations Manager, she's taken ownership of what happens after. In our latest Panda Perspectives, she talks about what that shift revealed, what contractors actually need, and why the operational side of recruitment is anything but routine.

Fatima grew up in Peru and built her career across cultures, and this is something that has quietly shaped how she connects with people. Based in the Netherlands and working in a DACH market, she navigates multiple languages, professional norms, and expectations as a matter of routine. It's a dynamic that could feel like friction. For Fatima, it's become a strength.

She came to Panda looking for something specific: not just a next role, but work that felt purposeful. A role where collaboration and impact were not incidental to the job, but central to it. "I was looking for something with greater purpose," she says. "A role where what I did each day actually meant something to the people on the other end of it." She found that alignment at Panda, and it's stayed with her through every chapter since.

Outside of work, Fatima is the kind of person who doesn't accept a verdict quietly. Told by doctors she would never run again, she's currently training for marathons. It is a detail she mentions without drama, but it says everything about how she approaches a challenge. She doesn't wait for permission to push further. She just does.

From placement to partnership

When Fatima joined Panda, her focus was on the moment of placement. Finding the right person for the right role and helping them take a confident step forward. It was purposeful work, and she was good at it, but moving into Contractor Operations changed something in how she saw the relationship.

"When I worked in recruitment, my goal was to help people take the next step in their careers," she explains. "Moving into Contractor Operations completely changed my perspective. I realised that while recruitment creates the opportunity, it's the experience afterwards that defines the relationship."

The insight sounds simple, but in practice, it reframes everything. "A contractor might remember who offered them the job, but they'll never forget how they were treated once they started. They'll remember whether their onboarding felt seamless, whether they knew where to go when they had a question, whether payroll was handled correctly, and whether someone genuinely took ownership when challenges arose."

That is where trust is built. Not in a single conversation, but in the hundreds of small interactions that follow. Having worked on both sides gives Fatima a perspective that's rare in contractor management: she understands the expectations created during recruitment, and the operational discipline required to consistently deliver on them.

What contractors actually need

One of the things Fatima heard most consistently during her time in recruitment was this: contractors don't expect perfection. What they do expect is honesty, transparency, and consistency.

"People understand that questions come up, projects evolve, and sometimes things don't go exactly as planned," she says. "What matters most is knowing that someone is there to communicate openly, take ownership, and keep them informed every step of the way."

The concerns she heard most often weren't dramatic, but practical. Clarity around contracts, confidence that onboarding would be smooth, certainty about payroll. Knowing who to contact when something needed resolving. "They weren't looking for constant attention. They were looking for confidence that someone had their back."

Now she's in a position to act on that directly. "Every process we improve, every communication we simplify, and every unnecessary hurdle we remove makes a difference. It may seem like a small operational change internally, but for a contractor, it can completely change how supported they feel."

That's something she's clear-eyed about. Contractor experience isn't built through one big initiative, but rather built through hundreds of small improvements that make someone's working life easier.

The small things that aren't small

Ask Fatima what it actually takes to make a contractor feel valued, and she doesn't reach for the obvious answers.

"Making someone feel valued starts long before there's a problem to solve," she says. "It's easy to step in when something has gone wrong. The real challenge is creating an experience where contractors consistently feel supported, informed, and connected, even when everything is running smoothly."

That means communicating proactively, following through on commitments, and never letting someone feel like they're chasing answers or navigating things alone.

"A timely update. A quick check-in before a contract ends. Clear communication around payroll. Remembering that behind every assignment is a person who's invested their time, skills, and trust in us."

Those moments might seem routine, but together, they shape how someone feels about working with Panda. "I've always believed that retention isn't something you achieve at the end of a contract. It is something you build throughout the entire journey." When people feel listened to, respected, and genuinely supported, they don't just complete an assignment. They become advocates. And in a market where reputation travels fast, that matters more than any single placement.

Why life sciences raises the stakes

Operational excellence in contractor management is easy to underestimate, precisely because it happens behind the scenes. When it works, nobody notices. When it doesn't, the consequences compound quickly.

"For me, it means creating an experience that's consistent, reliable, and built around the people we're supporting," Fatima explains. "Contractors having the right information at the right time. Onboarding that's seamless. Contracts that are accurate. Payroll that runs correctly. Compliance managed proactively. Issues resolved before they become frustrations."

In life sciences, the stakes behind those basics are higher than most industries would recognise.

"Our contractors contribute to projects that advance healthcare, develop new therapies, improve manufacturing processes, and ultimately make a real difference to people's lives. They work in highly regulated environments where delays, inaccuracies, or administrative issues can have consequences far beyond paperwork."

That's why operational excellence isn't simply about efficiency. It's about reducing complexity, protecting compliance, and creating an environment where exceptional people can do exceptional work without unnecessary distractions. "When we get the operational side right, we're supporting not only our contractors, but also the critical work they are helping to deliver."

How she'll show up

Fatima is direct about what she wants contractors to know.

"I want every contractor to know that, from the moment they join Panda, they have someone who genuinely cares about their experience. My role isn't simply to manage contracts or processes. It's to make sure every stage of the journey feels clear, supported, and well organised, so contractors can focus on what they were hired to do."

She's equally clear about what she holds herself to. "One thing I've learned throughout my career is that trust isn't built through promises. It's built through consistency. It's built by doing what you said you would do, by being available when people need you, and by treating every interaction as an opportunity to strengthen the relationship."

It's not a mission statement. It is a standard she has been applying since long before this role had a title.
